Eat Like You Give a Damn at Portage Bay Cafe - Go Organic!

4.16.10

If you've watched the movie Food Inc-Hungry For Change, you probably won't want to eat meat for a while - or at least you'll probably be watching what you eat. It's amazing to think of what variety is offered to consumers at a grocery store. We have to buy what's available for us in the price level we can afford.  Chips are cheaper than a head of broccoli, really? How can consumers like us afford to eat healthy when unhealthy food is way cheaper? Is the meat raised humanely?

We're paying a high price at a nice fancy restaurant. Would the meat be humanly raised? We expect a good sustainable organic meat, don't we? You never know. It's a blind spot we may have for foodies..I guess that's why the milk commercial is promoting about a happy cow. Happy cows = happy milk and meat = happy foodies

I have to say eating organic is pricey even though I like to. I couldn't force myself to buy everything organic and cook my daily dinner organically. At least my eggs and milk are organic free range! Isn't that good enough? After watching the movie, I suddenly thought of this restaurant - Portage Bay Cafe'. It now is one of our favorite brunch spots! Thanks to my good friend, David, for taking us there! They are offering a wide array of food sourced from sustainable, local, and organic farmers and producers. Honestly, I'm not able to tell the difference of taste between organic and non-organic food but my mind and soul are happy just thinking my food is raised humanely..

They are also open a catering business called The Organic Table. It's a new food trend and interesting business idea...We went to the restaurant at the U Village location at around noon and of course as expected..the wait was 30 mins or so. I was starving and thought to myself why would I want to do this to myself.  Another voice in my head was saying good food requires patience...

I went to grab myself a free trade coffee to wake myself up. Soy latte was a good start for the day. When we were seated, it didn't take us long to order since we knew what we wanted. I got a classic eggs benedict with smoked salmon and fried potatoes (photo shown above). If I could reorder this dish, I would have gotten Canadian bacon instead. The smoked salmon didn't win me over this time.

My husband, Keith, and a friend got a brunch combination of eggs, bacon, and fried potatoes with a choice of thick slices of French toast or pancakes. The highlight is the toppings bar! There are so many toppings for you to choose from...WOW..and they're all sustainable organic locally grown. How cool is that?

I have to say I'm impressed with their philosophy and idea, but the taste of the food doesn't make me have the yummm-feeling yet. The sound you have when you eat something you really like..yummm-so-good kinda feeling. However, their juice (especially the apple raspberry juice) is it!! That gave me the yumm-so-good feeling!

At least I felt good to take a small step in helping local farmers/producers here by eating and buying sustainable organically grown food. Eat like you give a damn, coz' with every bite you can change the world.  Start in your kitchen!

Found you on foodgawker. Love the pics. I have found Portage Bay's quality to be hit or miss. Sometimes it'd divine, and sometimes it's just awful. I highly recommend going early in the day, as items seem to be fresher then. They do not make everything to order, so things like potatoes sit around in grease for hours.

Thanks for the tip! I know I'd better get there early in the day. Lesson learned.

I so agree trying to eat free-range grown eggs and poultry is something all of us can do. I couldn't watch that movie because I know I would never want to eat meat again. Instead I will try to spend the extra money to buy meat of animals that are humanely grown. Thanks for the great post, T!

That looks really good. I love the photos you took, but I'd go with the bacon too :)If you won't mind, I'd really love to guide foodista readers to your site. Just add your choice of Foodista widget at the end of this blog post and you're all set. Thanks!

Love the guilt-free dining at Portage Bay Cafe! Have you tried emmer&rye, or Spring Hill? Both have local, sustainable food on their menus and are yummy, too!
